Dr Alistair Dobbin

Alastair Dobbin

MB BS, Honorary Fellow, School of Clinical Sciences and Community Health, Edinburgh University.

Alastair Dobbin qualified as a doctor in 1976 in London, and worked in London and Australia before settling in Edinburgh in full time General Practice.  As a busy GP he was always interested in helping his emotionally distressed patients. Along with Edinburgh University he researched into the use of relaxation and mental skills training in General Practice. This led him to study the use of an elite sports psychology programme in Sweden, and to develop the Positive Mental Training programme for depression.

Following positive research outcomes with Edinburgh University the programme has been established the NHS in Edinburgh for 10 years, also in parts of England for 6 years.  His interest in research continued with a collaboration with McGill University (looking at memory, resilience &  positive emotions) and subsequent ongoing projects in Edinburgh. He is a director of the Foundation for Positive Mental Health, and has published in a number of journals and book chapters on mental skills training and hypnotherapy. He lives with Sheila in Edinburgh, has 3 children and 1 grandchild and enjoys cycling and Scottish Country dancing.
